What is Acting
The great Indian author of dramaturgy, Bharata, has explained acting in detail and all subsequent writers, Indian or European, have followed the same Bharata-tradition of defining acting.
While defining acting, it can be said in short that acting is the emulation of characters in real-life situations and emotions.
In other words, acting is an art that makes the audience feel the situation and emotion that the actor wants them to feel. So, the communicating emotions is the soul of acting.
नाट्य-शास्त्र के महान भारतीय मनीषी, भरत-मुनि ने अभिनय को विस्तार से समझाया है और बाद के सभी लेखकों, भारतीय या यूरोपीय, ने अभिनय को परिभाषित करते हुए इसी भरत-परंपरा का पालन किया है। अभिनय को परिभाषित करते हुए संक्षेप में यह कहा जा सकता है कि वास्तविक जीवन की स्थितियों और भावनाओं में अवस्थित वास्तविक पात्रों का अनुकरण ही अभिनय है।
दूसरे शब्दों में, अभिनय एक कला है जो दर्शकों को उस स्थिति और भावनाओं को महसूस कराती है जो अभिनेता उन्हें महसूस कराना चाहता है। इसलिए भावनाओं का सम्प्रेषण अभिनय की आत्मा है।
Why Acting
The ability to communicate is an essential part of a perfect personality, and, there is no other way to develop this quality more elegantly and effectively than acting.
An acting-course is far more effective means of creating self-confidence, self-determination, optimism and an excellent communication skill in one's personality than all other lessons provided by commercial institutions in the name of personality development. Acting not only develops ‘power of expression’ and ‘thought-communication’, but also it improves one's aesthetic, literary and artistic aptitudes which are the indispensable qualities for a person's overall success in life. If a person has a natural inclination towards acting, the study of acting also paves the way for professional acting career in films and theatre.
अभिव्यक्ति अथवा विचार-सम्प्रेषण की क्षमता एक परिपूर्ण व्यक्तित्व का अनिवार्य अंग है, और, व्यक्तित्व में इस तत्व को विकसित करने का अभिनय के अतिरिक्त और कोई अधिक सुरुचिपूर्ण और प्रभावी तरीका नहीं है। व्यक्तित्व के विकास के लिए अभिनय-पाठ्यक्रम उन सभी प्रशिक्षणों की तुलना में कहीं अधिक प्रभावी है, जो व्यक्तित्व-विकास प्रशिक्षण के नाम पर व्यापारिक संस्थानों द्वारा प्रदान किया जाता है। अभिनय न केवल आपकी अभिव्यक्ति और विचार-सम्प्रेषण की शक्ति को विकसित करता है, बल्कि सौंदर्य-शास्त्रीय, साहित्यिक और कलात्मक योग्यता को भी विकसित करता है जो किसी व्यक्ति की समग्र सफलता के लिए अपरिहार्य गुण हैं। यदि किसी व्यक्ति का अभिनय के प्रति स्वाभाविक झुकाव है, तो अभिनय का अध्ययन उसे फिल्मों और थिएटर में एक पेशेवर अभिनेता के रूप में स्वयं को स्थापित करने का मार्ग भी प्रशस्त करता है।
Acting as Character & Personality Building
There is a general belief, though absolutely wrong, that memorising dialogues and reciting them on stage or in front of camera is called acting. In fact, learning 'to act' is virtually the process of augmenting sensitivity in a person's character
One can achieve it only by understanding the grammar of acting (dramaturgy or Bharata’s Nāṭya-śāstra), pursuing artistic instincts and developing literary and aesthetic sense in oneself. In fact, learning 'acting' is building some rare qualities in a person's character through guru-shishya tradition, which is more a type of spiritual learning rather than material.
That is why, acting is considered to be the supreme art, and Shiva, who is the symbol of perfection, is considered the guardian of this art. At the Institute of Acting, we provide the real and methodical study of 'acting' which is not available in other institutions related to theatre and cinema.
एक सामान्य (किन्तु बिल्कुल ही गलत) धारणा के तहत लोग संवाद याद करने और उसे मंच पर या कैमरे के सामने बोल देने की प्रक्रिया को ही अभिनय समझते हैं। जबकि अभिनय सीखना वस्तुतः एक व्यक्ति के चरित्र में संवेदनशीलता के सृजन की प्रक्रिया है।

इसे नाट्य-शास्त्र के व्याकरण को समझ कर, कलात्मक प्रवृत्तियों को परिमार्जित करके और साहित्यिक तथा सौंदर्य-बोध को विकसित करके ही प्राप्त किया जा सकता है। यह एक तथ्य है कि अभिनय प्रशिक्षण व्यक्ति के चरित्र में कुछ दुर्लभ गुणों को सृजित करता है, जो गुरु-शिष्य-परंपरा के माध्यम से ही संभव है। अतः अभिनय एक भौतिक प्रशिक्षण मात्र न होकर एक आध्यात्मिक साधना की प्रक्रिया है। यही कारण है कि अभिनय को सर्वोच्च कला माना जाता है, और शिव, जो सम्पूर्णता के प्रतीक हैं, को इस कला का संरक्षक माना जाता है। इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ एक्टिंग में अभिनय-शिक्षण की इसी शास्त्रीय परंपरा का अनुशीलन किया जा रहा है, जो इस क्षेत्र में अन्यत्र अनुपलब्ध है।
